CARTOGRAPHIC CERAMICS
Putting art on the map!
Year 10 GCSE Art students have
been working hard on an exciting
project exploring the theme of
cartography - the art of designing
and creating maps.
To spark their ideas, students
studied the work of a range of
contemporary artists, including
printmaker Derek Lerner, painter
Emily Garfield and ceramic artist
Craig Underhill.
Inspired by Underhill9s simple yet
striking abstract vessels, students
have designed and constructed
their own three dimensional
ceramic forms using slab building
techniques. Each piece reflects
students9 individual interpretations
while showcasing their growing
confidence, creativity, and
willingness to experiment with
new materials and techniques.
Next, students will bring their
work to life using coloured slips,
glazes, and oxides, adding depth,
character and individuality to their
finished pieces.
This project will make a strong
and exciting addition to their
GCSE portfolios.
Well done, Year 10!
