Speaking another language can shape a future
The MFL department has been
working closely with Bank of
America this term to help
students better understand the
value of language learning in the
world of work.
Students in Year 9 learned about
the benefits of speaking an
additional language as well as
the breadth of opportunities
available to linguists at university
and across a range of industries,
including the engineering and
financial sector. Nigel, Arantxa,
Conah and Anya shared how
languages have played a role in
shaping their lives and careers,
from trips to the German office to
participation in a Chinese dance
class.
Our students then had the
opportunity to ask these industry
experts how learning a language
has been beneficial in their lives
and how they use their language
skills on a daily basis. Several
students noted that they had
never considered the importance
of languages and their
application to different industries
before. Many students
commented that the session had
given them a new perspective
and really helped them to make
informed decisions for their
future.
I thought that Maths would be
the most important subject to study
for a job at Bank of America.
