I loved presenting to the
judges, it was daunting at first
but exciting. Through this
project we have gained further
understanding on how to help
our planet and the importance
of sustainable ingredients in the
products we use. Overall, it was
a very memorable experience.

8EVERCLEAN9 & EVERGREEN
Designing for a greener tomorrow
In March, our team of five Year 9
students attended the Unilever
celebration and assessment day. This
involved students presenting their ecofriendly home care product they had
been designing for the Unilever Bright
Future Inspire Programme, to a range of
judges and Unilever employers.
The celebration and assessment day
followed on from an event back in
November which aimed to spark
students9 interest in STEM subjects
through an exclusive behind-the-scenes
look at Unilever9s Research and
Development site. Students from schools
across Merseyside, Cheshire, and the
wider North West took part in the
workshop and were set an exciting
challenge: to design and develop a realworld project back at school, ready to
launch in March.
Our eco-friendly team developed a
washing powder that works effectively
at lower temperatures, helping to save
energy. To further reduce consumers9
carbon footprints, they packaged the
product in plantable packaging. The
team also created branding and
packaging for their product, Everclean,
formulated the washing powder, and
conducted consumer research to support
their design.
Throughout the day students had to
present their products to three teams of
judges who also asked them questions
about the sustainability and formulation
of their product.
As students had been preparing for this
since November, they presented their
ideas confidently and gave intuitive
answers to the judges9 questions.
Although Queen9s Park did not take
home any awards this year, the students
gained a range of invaluable skills,
including team work, communication and
problem solving. Through this project
they deepened their understanding of
science and had the opportunity to
speak to a variety of STEM employers,
that will hopefully inspire them to pursue
careers in these industries in the future.
In recognition of their hard work, the
students earned a CREST Discovery
Award and were presented with a
certificate from Unilever.
Congratulations to Amelie H, Alexa DBS,
Emily LJ, Millie C and Alice F.
I have developed my confidence when
presenting my ideas to my peers and the
judges. This project also allowed me to
develop my creativity and teamwork skills!

I am very proud of the work our
students have put into this project,
as well as their teamwork and
commitment. They presented
confidently to the judges and
tackled some difficult questions.
