CAMBRIDGE BOUND
Next step: one of the world9s top universities
On 13th February, 10 Year 12
students got up at the crack of
dawn to join Mrs Prydden and
Year 12 students from other
Chester schools for an exciting
visit to Fitzwilliam College,
Cambridge.
After a very long journey, the
group arrived at one of the
university9s 31 prestigious
colleges. Despite its modern
1970s architecture, Fitzwilliam
College impressed the students
with its grand surroundings and
rich academic atmosphere. They
were warmly welcomed by the
college9s outreach team, who
introduced them to the differences
between university types before
leading a tour of the campus,
guided by a second-year
geography undergraduate. Our
students were able to see the vast
facilities on offer at the college
including the impressive library.
Back in the seminar hall, students
gained valuable insights into the
UCAS application process and
learned about the importance of
the 8super curriculum9 in
strengthening their applications.
One of the highlights of the visit
was the collaborative challenge,
where students from different
Chester schools tackled a thought
-provoking 8big question9 such as
estimating how many glasses of
water would fill an Olympic-sized
swimming pool! There was a
definite buzz on the coach home,
with students looking at the
subject masterclasses for which
they can apply.
We are thrilled with the news that
Daisy Hopkins has already
secured a place in a subject
masterclass to attend virtual
sessions, before she heads back
to Cambridge in the Easter
holidays. Well done Daisy!
Although it was a long day, our
students found it incredibly valuable.
Their eyes were opened to the
opportunities available and the steps
they need to take to make their
applications stand out.
