OCEAN HEROES & AI DETECTIVES
Year 5 tackle plastic pollution and artificial intelligence
We were thrilled to welcome Year 5
children from Belgrave Primary to
take part in two exciting workshops.
The workshops explored the theme of
8Plastic Oceans9.
In Geography with Mrs Clelland
students were introduced to the story
8A Place for Plastic9 which was used
to learn all about how single-use
plastics such as bags, straws and
bottles are impacting marine life. The
Year 5 class had to imagine they
were the marine animals who have to
share their home with 10009s of
tonnes of plastic, and write
persuasive letters to humans to try
and stop plastic pollution for good.
Over in Computing with Mr Griffiths,
children took a deep dive into the
world of artificial intelligence with 8AI
for Oceans9. The interactive activity
introduced them to the basics of
machine learning by training a
computer to identify different types of
ocean trash!
Our staff were very impressed with
the children9s knowledge of climate
change and the environment. The
Year 5 class demonstrated their
awareness of how important it is to
keep our oceans clean and produced
impressive persuasive writing pieces
which shared their views on the
future. The students also showed off
their computer skills in Mr Griffiths9
workshop and by the end of the
morning were confidently able to
articulate the pros and cons of
artificial intelligence.
The Belgrave class provided us with
lots of interesting feedback about all
the facts they had taken on board
during a short Q&A session in the hall
before they departed back to school.
Whilst joining us for the morning,
Year 5 also shared how excited they
were to visit again in less than a
month9s time for our annual school
production, with this year9s offering
being the musical version of 8Ghost9.
