CREATIVE COLLABORATION
Inspiring art workshop with Ian Murphy
Our Year 12 A Level Art and Design
students recently had the exciting
opportunity to take part in a dynamic
mixed media workshop led by
renowned British artist Ian Murphy.
Hosted at Christleton High School,
the event brought together students
from across the Trust9s high schools
- including QPHS and Chester
International School. This
collaborative day celebrated
creativity while strengthening
partnerships within the Trust.
Ian Murphy, best known for his
striking tonal drawings and
atmospheric architectural paintings,
began the day by sharing insights
into his creative process. He
brought along an inspiring collection
of his work including sketchbooks,
large-scale drawings, and wallmounted paintings - emphasising the
value of sketching to develop ideas.
Students explored a range of
drawing techniques, starting with the
creation of textured surfaces.
Through Ian9s clear demonstrations,
they gained confidence
experimenting with various media,

stimulus for their own pieces. It was
fantastic to see our students fully
immersed in the creative process,
producing four pieces each simultaneously - just as Ian does in
his own practice. This fast-paced,
multi-tasking approach encouraged
them to step outside their comfort
zones and work with energy and
focus.
The results were outstanding, with
students showcasing remarkable
creativity and skill. We9re excited to
see how these works evolve as they
continue to build their portfolios back
in school.
I experimented using different techniques and
materials. These included newspaper, brown paper,
graphite powder, ink, fine pens and bleach. I really
enjoyed the experience as it helped me to develop
my work and took me out of my comfort zone.
