ReMark EXHIBITION
Exploring Bold Abstract Art
On Friday 28th February, our Year
10 Art & Design students had the
incredible opportunity to experience
the 8ReMark9 exhibition at the
Grosvenor Centre9s Exhibition Space
- a showcase of contemporary
abstract painting from four acclaimed
Northwest artists: Julie Mayer, Julie
Saul, Terry Duffy, and Annie Byrne.
The exhibition hosted by Chester
Visual Arts celebrates abstract
traditions in bold and unique ways,
from expressive and gestural
brushstrokes to structured geometric
compositions. Students absorbed
themselves in a world of dynamic
colours, textures, and mark-making,
sparking fresh inspiration for their
own work back at school.
During the visit, students explored a
wide range of theme and scale of
artwork. They engaged in critical
thinking about abstract work,
including its shape, colour, texture
and surface qualities. Students took
on the challenge of 5-minute
observational sketches using various
media to record the work in their
sketchbooks. These studies will
serve as a valuable foundation for
their future coursework.
One of the biggest highlights was the
immersive mark-making area within
the gallery space, where students
needed no encouragement to add
their own gestural and emotive
marks, inspired by the powerful work
on display.
Having access to such an incredible
artistic resource right on our
doorstep in the heart of Chester is
something that we can use to inspire
new teaching and learning
opportunities. Students are now
using this experience and developing
their own art to support their GCSE
studies.
It was so refreshing to spend some
lesson time in a local gallery. Students
worked incredibly hard and were
focused on getting as much drawing
and recording as they could, in
the time spent in the gallery.
