A DAY OF DISCOVERY
Former Student returns with Oxford Team
In September, we had the privilege
of welcoming the Oxford University
Chemistry Outreach Team, joined
by former QPHS student Julia
Neal, for an exciting day of
interactive workshops showcasing
the vital role of chemistry in the
modern world.
Julia, who went on to study
Chemistry at the University of
Oxford, returned to school as an
accomplished alumna to share her
journey and inspire the next
generation. Her visit was a
fantastic opportunity for students
to learn from her experience and
success, and we were thrilled to
welcome her back.
The day began with Year 12
students attending an engaging
talk on cutting-edge research
projects currently underway at
Oxford University. The session
aimed to spark curiosity and
encourage students to consider
studying Chemistry at degree
level.
Meanwhile, Year 10 Triple Science
students took part in 8A Bug Fight9,
an interactive workshop exploring
antibiotics and the development of
antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Students examined zones of
inhibition using a photo of a disc
diffusion assay (DDA), gaining
insight into real-world microbiology
challenges.
Year 11 students enjoyed 8Small
but Mighty9, a fascinating
introduction to nanoscience. They
explored practical techniques used
in degree-level studies, giving
them a taste of advanced scientific
investigation and the exciting
possibilities within this field.
A huge thank you to Oxford
University and especially Julia, for
delivering such an inspiring and
educational experience for our
students. It was a privilege to
welcome Julia back to Queen9s
Park. Her journey from QPHS
Sixth Form to Oxford is truly
inspiring, and we are immensely
proud of all she has achieved.
Seeing her share her passion and
expertise with our students was a
wonderful reminder of what hard
work and ambition can lead to.
